Ever wondered how to make candles from scratch? How about using old crayons? This may surprise you but candle making isn’t all about paraffin wax. In fact, you can make candles out of worn-out materials like old crayons.

Below are the following steps on how to make candles from scratch.

  1. First, prepare all the materials. This will include a pound of paraffin, 4 to 5 pieces of used crayons, two trays full of ice cubes, a carton of milk or orange juice, a double boiler and a piece of conventional white package string, which is about six inches long.

As a precautionary measure, it is advised to not heat the wax over direct heat. Remember that paraffin wax gets burned easily. Make use of a double boiler or a coffee can in melting your paraffin.

  1. Get the milk carton and trim the top part. Leave an estimated six inches sized carton box. Cut the string to about six inches long. You may also want to braid three pieces of string to create a long-lasting and thicker wick.
  2. Melt the wax using medium heat and wait for the wax to melt for around ten to fifteen minutes. Break old crayons in small pieces and pour everything in the mixture to melt. Remember that in order to achieve the right consistency, always make sure that the wax is fully melted.
  3. In learning how to make candles from scratch, it is advisable to have the right tools and equipment. For instance, always use tongs in dipping the string to melted paraffin. Hold the string and place it in the middle of the carton box and slowly pour in the ice cubes.
  4. Once the cubes are placed inside the carton box, you can now pour in the molten paraffin mixture. Let it set for 30 minutes. Wait for another hour or two to make sure that all ice cubes have melted. Slowly pour water and peel off the carton to reveal your first homemade candle. It is also advisable to place your finished candles in trays and let it dry for around one or two days.

The same process can be used in making solid and scented candles. Just choose glass molds or utilize pint-sized jelly jars as candle containers. For scented candles, add in a few teaspoons of vanilla in the double boiler. After which, you can now place your broken pieces of crayon and paraffin and wait for everything to melt.

Learning how to make candles from scratch can be made easy. Just keep in mind the above-mentioned steps and everything will fall rightly into place. You don’t really need a costly bunch of materials to get started. For with 4 to 5 pieces of used or old crayons, the idea of facing hot molten wax becomes less intimidating.
